(1) put the roots down (2) then push them deep into the ground – DIY for Emigrants // Helga Lázár (Germany)
Helga Lázár (Germany)
“To put down roots. Like hammering a nail into a wall. A striking, almost handcrafted expression. And how nice it would be to have an IKEA-style manual for it. A kind of step-by-step guide. A DIY – Build Yourself a Home – explaining how to (1) find a place for yourself in a foreign culture, (2) build a social network, and (3) dare to rely on it. Especially today. Especially in Europe. Until settling in becomes as easy as assembling a Billy bookcase, we take the complexity of the subject as our field of research — and our own experiences.” “(1) put the roots down” is an autobiographical solo performance by Helga Lázár. Born in Hungary and based in Leipzig, she explores themes of migration, rootedness, body memory, identity, and transgenerational patterns. Using ropes, carabiners, physical action, and absurd humour, she brings her migration and family history to the stage, expanding it into a broader map of contemporary collective rootlessness.
