Leonce and Lena
German State Theatre Timișoara (RO)
For a long time, „Leonce and Lena”, the melancholic comedy about two young people who cannot find their place, was considered a failure. It was blamed for the lack of action and the absence of a classic construction. The fact that someone had difficulties with himself like those stated by Leonce – „Oh, if only someone could be someone else. Just for a minute.” -, the fatigue of the world, which makes the two protagonists soul-related beings, contradicted the already existing image of the human face at the time. Leonce and Lena were two strangers in an irrational world, where only irony and self-irony could still offer consolation. Their melancholy derives from the lack of illusions and the rejection of idealizing visions.
