Tar Sándor-Keresztury Tibor

He still knows how to make silence in a pub, said Bodor Ádám of Tar Sándor, a Hungarian author with a tragic fate who nevertheless had an authentic voice when writing about the depths of the Hungarian life. His heroes are the exiled of history: humiliated, crippled, pushed to the margins of the map, the peripheries of society, everyday people, who have never been offered a place at the table. Despised workers, who dedicated their whole lives to helping build up socialism, but who, afterwards, found themselves alone, disabled, annihilated by the regime change.

Tar’s short stories are adapted by Keresztury Tibor, an author who is also familiar with the language of the subdued. His play presents an inconsolable story that is at once dramatic and absurd with great empathy and humour, while the brutally crude and realistic events are dissolved into poetic visions in Forte Company’s performance. The creative energy and radical means of staging typical to this company help the viewer immerse into the world of the marginalised, with an effect that hardly ever wears off.

The choruses entitled Vadászó csiga and Harangoznak from Farkas Ferenc’ collection Öt kis gyermekkar Kassák Lajos verseire are used in the performance with the permission of the composer’s legal heir.
