A Short Tale of the Antichrist
The performance is created through a dialogue which theatre establishes with Vladimir Slovyov’s work Three Conversations, more precisely with Third Conversation – A Short Tale of the Antichrist, a polemical philosophical work from 1900, in which the author presents his apocalyptic vision of the future of the mankind. He gets very close to the Orthodox Holy Tradition, claiming that all the religions, including various versions of Christianity, will be united by the Antichrist, the one named “the man of lawlessness”. This performance studies the spiritual sci-fi reality of Solovyov’s work, The Short Tale of the Antichrist in relation to the spiritual reality of our times. In his philosophical debate, Solovyov sees all the postmodern, one-dimensional figures of the Antichrist from the 20th century’s political context as a precondition for the arrival of the real Antichrist. That is, he thinks that the warring East and West, that see one another as antichrists, represent a fertile ground for the arrival of the global ruler of the future who really will be “the fallen son”, and that he will arrive as a grand peacemaker and beneficiary of the mankind rather than a conqueror and a statesman. Solovyov’s philosophical debate is a starting point of this theatre study, an attempt to debate the definitions of social evil in comparison to the institutional evil, the system evil, as well as the evil and the good in the metaphysical sense or defined through the liberal capitalism of today.
