Crime and Punishment

Crime and Punishment

Fyodor Dostoyevsky

“The concept is such that crime already contains punishment, that these two are inseparable. Raskolnikov would very gladly separate the two, he would commit the crime without the punishment, because he feels he should not be punished; maybe someone else should be, an ordinary man certainly should be, but not him, because he has the gift of saying the new word to this world. Punishment is an integral part of this metaphysical issue, the issue of truth – that each of our actions in reality has a certain consequence. We could say, action and consequence, instead of crime and punishment.” (Ana Tomović)

Ana Tomović (1979, Belgrade) graduated from the Department of Theatre and Radio Directing of the Faculty of Drama Arts in Belgrade, in the class of prof. Egon Savin. Laureate of two Joakim Vujić Directing Awards. Her production of The Doll Ship was the winner of Sterijino pozorje festival in 2009.

Yugoslav Drama Theatre, founded in 1947, is one of the most important and the most representative theatres of former Yugoslavia. It is also the biggest drama theatre in the region. The working principles have remained untouched from the beginning: the best actors and the best directors are hired for the productions of both classical and contemporary plays, domestic as well as foreign ones. The stress is on innovative staging of well-known plays and putting on daring new work dealing with relevant subject matters – from Shakespeare to Biljana Srbljanović. YDT tours frequently in Europe and the ex-Yugoslav states, and in other parts of the world as well. Member of the Union of Theatres of Europe since 2006. It was awarded several times by all major region and national festivals.
